Forget about knowing later rather than sooner about the mistakes new online affiliate marketers face when first starting out.
It’s far better you know now and are aware of what can ultimately stop you in your tracks from reaching ultimate online success. So here are the 10 most common errors of beginning online business owners.
Contents
#1: Being Overwhelmed By Information
If you aren’t careful, you can be overloaded with information when you first are starting out. So much so, it can be very overwhelming and off-putting or daunting. So it pays to take it one bite at a time as it is easier to digest. So pace yourself and set a weekly goal for yourself to listen, read or watch related information a certain number of times a week. Then stick to your goal – you can never learn enough. A break is always a good idea to clear the mind and to let your mind rest. The intake of information is easier to handle when you have a clear rested mind.
#2: Unreal Expectations
You can totally make money from internet marketing. No doubt about that! However, will the money magically appear or fall from the sky into your lap? No way will that happen!!! Like anything in life it is going to take commitment, learning new knowledge, backed by action,… and yes.. this does mean work for you. Don’t sweat it though, because you too can have the lifestyle you crave for and the new toys you desperately want, or the dream holiday and the new home. Whatever it is you want, you can have, if you put the time and effort into what it takes to get there.
#3: Procrastination
Well, this comes down to having the ability to set clear, concise goals for yourself. I’m sure you have heard this before. But goal setting is crucial to success – both short and long-term goals. Keeping a daily/weekly schedule with daily and weekly goals along with how you intend to carry them out will go a long way to reaching ultimate success. Long-term goals are the same,… reading out aloud to yourself these long-term goals last thing at night before going to sleep and again when you first wake up, will really cement them in your mind and keep you focused.
#4: Not Having Your Own Domain Name
They are not free, however, they are incredibly cheap and affordable. For the cost of a McDonalds Combo can also secure your very own domain name for one year. For a little more you are able to get hosting services which you pay per month,… but depending on who you host with, you could get an annual subscription which works out far cheaper. Yes…you could sign up for free hosting with a free Blogging or WordPress site, but this means you will be giving up control and ranking, and possibly the earning potential of your online business in the long-term.

#5: Becoming A One Trick Pony
Affiliate Marketing is the best place for a newbie to start in the industry, and ideally learn the trade and to start earning a few bucks. It’s not necessarily a long-term solution to a steady income without knowing the product creation side. So, once you figure out what you are doing, scaling and diversification is the next phase to follow.
#6: Not Focusing On List Building
“An internet marketers list is pretty much like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!” This is what often can be heard from any experienced online affiliate marketer who has ‘cracked it’!… Think of it as having several people sitting in your living room every day just waiting to hear what you have to offer that is of value to them. By building your list thoughtfully, your subscribers will not only start to trust you, but they will start to value your opinion. This then equals conversions and money in the bank for you.
#7: Sending Untargeted Traffic To Your Offers
Why would you try to sell something to someone who has no interest or use for it? This would be like trying to sell a car to a blind man. So, of course, there is no sense in that. So to harness untargeted traffic to purchase something is a total waste of time because they are just not interested. Know your target market and buyers that find value in your offer then watch your sales numbers fly off the charts.
#8: Treating A Business As If It Is A Hobby
Committing to your business cause must rein, even if it is based on your hobby. Again it comes back to having clear concise goals that keep you focused on your business. If you honestly want to be successful with an internet marketing business then truly look at it as a legitimate doable online business rather than just a hobby you do now and then. Think like this and you will truly see its worth
#9: Working Alone
You will have to overcome shyness if this is who you are. Reaching out for help to those who know things you don’t will be necessary as well as being able to network. Networking with others on forums, blogs, face-to-face, in online communities make all the difference. A lot of people don’t like to be photographed or videoed but video and audio content drive traffic, so overcoming this shyness will only be beneficial to you and your business.
#10: Not Having A Mentor
Ask for help when you need it or suffer in silence. For your sake, find a mentor and ask for help! A qualified mentor will help and guide you, much like a taxi driver in an unknown city when you don’t have a map. it’s easy to get lost when you don’t know where you are heading.

This is really a great post and I recognize a lot of mistakes I have done.
For example, being overwhelmed and trying to do too many things at the same time. Often you end up with everything being “halfdone” nothing done correctly.
Not focusing on what your doing is really a big problem. Trying many niches at the same time without really getting in touch with your audience and trying get to know them and their needs. If you don’t know your audience then it is very tough to try to sell them anything. Often when starting out, people tend to think that if you just send a lot of traffic to a good offer it is going to convert and you will make money. This simply is not the case, you must send the right offer to the right person at the right time.
Thank you for this post, it really reminds me of a lot of things I need to deal with right now.

Hi Jojo! Thanks for stopping by and for the comments. Yes I think also that keeping motivated is key and this can be done via your goals and reminding yourself the end goal you are trying to reach. Important as well that your end goal is BIG enough ensuring that you are constantly stretching yourself to reach it. DREAM BIG!
Hello Rina,
Thanks for the breakdown on common mistakes made by beginner online marketers. I know procrastination is bad for anything especially affiliate marketing.
I’ve tried to write daily on my website and it was easy because I made it a habit. However, things started going down hill once I decided to slack off because of the latest movie or video game.
Thanks for the wake up call,
Eric
Hi Eric! So glad you called by! I hope all goes well. It can totally be worth your time and the rewards will be reflective of the effort you put in!
Regards 🙂
I sometimes find myself procrastinating a lot when I perform my online business tasks. Setting goals is something I had not considered, yet something I do plan to start now! Thank you for the helpful ideas. I also plan to tone down my information overload a bit, that is something else I sometimes have troubles with.
Hi Maria! Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. I’m glad the article has given you some useful ideas. You might want to vary forms of content including text articles, video and infographics if you are not already.
🙂
Procrastination has been a big one for me, but it is one that I am definitely learning to overcome. I also starting to branch out into email marketing and trying to get a list going, but it has been slow going as of late. I definitely agree with the use of a mentor as you’ll want to have someone who has been successful, guiding you to make your own profitable business. Thanks for sharing this!
Hiya Brian. ‘Life’ is distracting and can slow your efforts down, and so it can be helpful to have some guidance/coaching and training to keep you on track to hitting the targets you set for yourself. It certainly has helped me to build a successful online business. Please do not hesitate to reach out for help as it certainly can make all the difference.
🙂
Absolutely fantastic advice! I’ve had to learn many of these the hard way.
Overloading on information and becoming overwhelmed was probably my most significant mistake. It’s exhausting! Starting from scratch, and learning all new things, takes a lot of time, and I was in too much of a hurry.
I’m glad that you emphasized the importance of diversifying flows of income. I make far more money from my physical products store on Shopify than I do from affiliate marketing, but I learned the necessary skills from affiliate marketing. They go together well.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jordan for stopping by 🙂
Thanks for the eye opener as I just started 2 months ago. I’m guilty to some of these especially number 6 (not focusing on list building). I thought that this would be a distraction for my visitors to the site. Now that I thought about it more from what you said, it totally makes sense to build the list. I know that there are plugins out there that we can use for email opt-in but I’m not sure which is the best one to use. I don’t like pop-ups since I myself hate it when I visit a website. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks a lot!
Ian Froi
Hi Ian
Thanks for your comments Ian. Yes, I think there are many of us in the same boat in terms of making mistakes. I like you also get a little anoyed with the pop-ups. You can actually set the pop-up to behave in various ways. Have you tried this?
